I completely agree. I bought a Ninjago city Gardens set as soon as it was available
a couple of years ago, and most of the minifigures' arms cracked as soon
as I put weapons or anything else in their hands. Luckily, that was the last
time a set did that to me.

  So I pretty recently bought the GWP Tahu and Takua set, and have been noticing
an alarming number of cracked parts. I put the set together, occasionally pose
it a little, but haven't done anything like repeatedly disassembling and
then reassembling the set. Most of the time the set is just standing on my little
shelf, not under any direct sunlight. Yet it seems like every time I pick the
build up, I find a new cracked piece. All three side-stud pieces in both takua's
and tahu's head are cracked. both the ingot pieces on Tahu's, cracked.
One of the arches making up takua's arm? Cracked. One of the half-pound tiles
that makes up takua's toes? Cracked.

And that's only what I've found. I have a suspicion that if I were to
take the set apart, I'd find even more cracked pieces.

So my question is, well, in the title.

Yes. For over a decade.

The 80s and 90s were really the golden era of LEGO quality. The Samsonite bricks
of the early era warped terribly.

There are tradeoffs though, the variety of molds and colors have increased.

Trans- 1x1 plates have always been an issue. I think all my old PC ones are cracked.

This doesn't really surprise me. My biggest passion is for Transformers,
and one thing I learned from that community is that translucent plastic can't
handle being under stress over a period of time, say as a peghole or ball socket.

My latest purchase direct from lego has tan pieces that appear to be made out
of a new material? They are different but the same. I'm not sure how to explain
it. I figured this was going to happen at some point with new ingredients, different
factories etc etc. Tan is just not a color you notice differences in but I guess
it now will join reddish brown and pearl gold with shades varying. Curious to
hear if others have seen quality issues or changes to pieces in recent orders.

Reddish Brown is catastrophic here.

Last week building a test model I broke 2 or 3 Plates of this color

See my recent post about Dark Blue and Dark Red.

Just remembered Sabine made a creation out of the various bits of one of broken
the Plates plus various parts and tests around, see it (sorry bad picture, it's
night here).
(the lime stand is a SNOT trick I tested)

Yep, just look at the renders of this new set. As you can see the colour inconsistency
is crazy.

Yes, "less interesting" was perhaps an unfair characterization. I should
say, the more monotonic livery!

Strange as it seems, this was the set I had in mind, hence the longing for a
trans-green canpoy.

haha ok, I'll give you the 'monochrome' part...but it was the early
80's, there weren't a lot of colors then!

I forgot they did slopes, bricks, and panels in the trans-green in the series,
but the windscreens then were the more square looking 4474 6x4x2 like on the
Blacktron Invader. Anything like you're looking for didn't appear until
Space Police II, so that's more what I was getting at.

Yeah, it slipped my mind they did some of the smaller windscreens in the trans-green
for later sets. Still wasn't until Space Police II that they came in the
10x4x2 needed here, though.

Set No: 6901 Name: Mobile Lab
*
6901-1 (Inv) Mobile Lab
117 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1980
Sets: Space: Classic Space

I'm currently working on a redux version of the mobile lab; I just can't
seem to come up with a nice update for the wheels.

  I really, really love the lines of this set. It’s one of the best LEGO has produced
in a long time. I can see myself creating many more of these. I already have
a few more ideas brewing…

The Classic Space one pretty much nails the scheme, and the Blacktron I version
is great, as well!

I second the Ice Planet idea, and will also say Space Police I and Blacktron
II would be great for it, as well.

Definitely given me ideas!

Though most of the early sets had the trans-yellow or trans-blue pieces; it
wasn't until Futuron (I think) when they went with the trans-green.

Before Futuron:

Set No: 6891 Name: Gamma V Laser Craft
*
6891-1 (Inv) Gamma V Laser Craft
121 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1985
Sets: Space: Classic Space

There already was White+Black+Trans-Blue sets before this one.

This set mixed both the Blue+LG+Trans-Yellow and White+Black+Trans-Blue schemes:

Set No: 6927 Name: All Terrain Vehicle
*
6927-1 (Inv) All Terrain Vehicle
161 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1981
Sets: Space: Classic Space

As for suggestions on the green canopy, they did make

Part No: 2507  Name: Windscreen 10 x 4 x 2 1/3 Canopy
*
2507 Windscreen 10 x 4 x 2 1/3 Canopy
Parts: Windscreen {Trans-Green}

that could work, though you'd have to change the connect point...
