Jack is looking to step away from the bustle of everyday life and immerse himself in the serene beauty of the Mongolian steppes. He is being hosted by Delbee who manages tourists visiting the ger camp, a grouping of yurts (known as ger) where Jack will be holidaying. These circular, cozy structures are designed for both comfort and harmony with nature, providing a unique blend of rustic charm and modern amenities including vibrant carpets, soft bedding, and the familiar glow of a wood-burning stove to keep cozy on chilly evenings.
During the days, Jack ventures out on horseback through the rolling hills and experiences the timeless landscape that appears to stretch endlessly. If he is lucky, he may spot wild horses, marmots, or birds of prey such as Bilguun, the resident owl, who hangs around camp to help keep the rodents at bay. Around the camp he is also able to connect with the welcoming nomadic people who still practice age-old traditions, from herding sheep to preparing delicious, hearty meals and fresh dairy products.
The evenings then provide a magical time as the sun sets over the rolling hills, casting a golden glow across the land, and then reveals a sea of stars that can only been experienced when one is away from the lights of city living. He can gather around with fellow travelers to share stories before retreating to his yurt and try learning to play the tovshuur (before quickly giving up).
