The "Medieval Prison" design is my recreation of the historic prison of Annecy, France (also known as Palais de l'Isle). It is nota replica but it was used as an inspiration. I tried to capture the medieval architecture blended with the creative possibilities of Lego parts.

The prison of Annecy stands on an island in the Thiou River with limited access to the mainland. Its unique triangular shape, stone walls and narrow windows inspired me.

My design process started with researching the history and architecture of Annecy prison. I studied its structure and details to make sure my model would be accurate enough. I then started building in the Studio app, focusing on the important features and adding details gradually. I started the building process from the main building together with the exterior yard (mainly the exterior walls & structure), then jumped to the base that is rock-based and at the end, I added features and details in the interiors and the yard. Some highlights on my building process:

  1. Detailing: I used small casual bricks to replicate the stone walls and windows with extra details used for decoration to create a realistic look and icnrease the interest of the fans.
  2. Modular Building: The model is built in sections that can be taken apart. The Yard can be separated from the main Prison building, the building is split into 3 part and a removable roof. This makes it easier to access/see the interior and understand the building's structure
  3. Interactive Elements: Hinged walls and removable roof are added so users can explore the interior. This makes the model more engaging and fun to play with.

A short description of the model:

  • Stone walls and narrow windows, typical to medieval prisons
  • Fortress-like gates and pointed towers that reflect the prison's medieval heritage
  • A surrounding scene with a river and rocks
  • A fully equipped yard focused on execution tools to accurately represent history (hanging chains, guillotine)
  • Interior details such as cells and guardrooms to offer a hands-on experience
