This model was inspired by the classic conflict between the Knights and Forestmen in the LEGO Castle theme. I remember spending hours looking at the amazing scenes in the LEGO catalogues of the 90's and wanted to capture some of that magic in a modern set aimed for adult builders.

The build centres on a citadel built deep in the forest. This is the base of operations for the forest people, actively looking to right the wrongs committed by the evil queen and her knights. While walking along the forest path there is little to give away the scale of the forest people's endeavours. All that can be seen is a humble cottage. But look up, and you will see the expansive network of fortifications the forest people have built in the trees. The knights have little hope of making it through without facing capture and the rightful return of their treasure to the poor townspeople from whom it was stolen.

The set takes design cues from classic Castle themes and reimagines them with modern parts and building techniques. I wanted the design to be focused on nature and have a 'natural' feel - a difficult thing to achieve in LEGO! The defining part of the build is the angular base plate. This base plate design causes studs to go in all directions - difficult to build on, but great for recreating the natural meandering of a forest path or stream. The nature theme continues with a great variety of trees and animals to make the scene come to life.

However, the model is not just a display piece. There are numerous traps to be triggered, passages to be traversed and secrets to be discovered. There is also plenty of variety in the model, making for a truly enjoyable building experience.

The forest people finally have a home worthy of their noble deeds!
