Inspiration: The design is inspired by modern offshore oil rig designs. The oil rig is designed to the scale of 1:300.
Design Process: I began with detailed research on the subsystems in an oil drilling platform. After the research was finished I began designing the oil rig. The difficult part of the design process is mostly the research. The design is broken down into many sub-models with a consistent building technique with the intention to make the building experience less stressful. I spent the most time ensuring the body is structurally rigid and solid while also crammed with details of different subsystems. I also spent much effort in perfecting the model by adding subtle details such as the declarative angular beams on the pontoons and adding different exhaust ports behind the engine section.
Description of Final Design:
This design encompasses a space of approximately 9.4 inches long and 6.2 inches wide. The design will require approximately 2100 pieces to build.
This oil rig design contains stabilizer pontoons, helipad, crew quarters, drilling derricks. It has multiple moving cranes and 7 removable tops for detailed interior inspection. Parts such as water filtration systems, sediment filters, liquid gas separation tanks, drilling fluid pumps and other pumping equipment are also represented in the model.
This design model is carefully represented through much research into current oil rig designs for authenticity. This design is not a direct copy, it is an original creation. Smaller details such as lifeboats and pipings can be clearly seen as upper covers are removed. The design components are separated into different sub-models consisting of The Base Platform, Pontoons, Bridge and living quarters, Oil Drilling Derricks, Oil Drilling/filtration Equipment, Engine Section, and many other components.
This design was created to be user-friendly and intuitive. All sequences of part assembly are logical and carefully explained in the instructions. This model has been designed to provide an entertaining building experience without frustration.
