About the Set

The Steam Powered Science (previously known as the Exploratorium) is a Steam-Punk themed research facility whose mission is to delve into the mysteries of the universe. One half of the facility is dedicated to researching celestial motion while the other is dedicated to traversing the ocean’s depths. The set was designed as part of the Flight Works Series, a group of Steam-Punk themed submissions on LEGO Ideas.

Originally, the Steam Powered Science took about a year and a half to develop before being submitted to LEGO Ideas. It’s now been part of the BrickLink Designer Program for nearly as long. There were many challenges getting the Steam Powered Science ready for crowdfunding. LEGO Ideas is more focused on concepts than production and the submission that reached 10k had never been built in real life. Although the original design was structurally sound and most of the elements functioned as intended, it used impossible colors and parts that were discontinued in the distant past. 90% of the bricks had to be swapped out to meet the program requirements and all the functional elements went through at least one revision. Half of the set was at risk of being cut for non-standard building techniques at one point or another and the whole design was in danger of being kicked out of the program more than once. The revision process was incredibly stressful, as my building techniques pushed the limits of what could be allowed while the scope and complexity of the project made the process drag on longer and longer.

I know many of you have waited a long time for the opportunity to buy your own Steam Powered Science, and I’ve waited even longer for this chance. However, as a designer, there is always something more I wish I could do to make my work that little bit better. God willing, this set will soon make its way to your doorsteps and I hope you find enjoyment in the things we worked to create.

Keep exploring,

~ Scott Nussbaum

Author Bio

Hello everybody, my name is Scott Nussbaum. I live in the United States in a small city in Wisconsin and am currently employed as a Behavioral Technician, doing work with Autistic children. The study of philosophy and theology is one of my favorite pursuits and I’ve been a LEGO fan since I was a kid. I’ve always thought becoming a LEGO designer would be fun and my interests in LEGO revived after I started using my old sets for a tabletop RPG. Eventually, I learned about LEGO Ideas and decided to see how far I could get. Being part of the BrickLink Designer Program has taken up more of my life than I’d originally thought it would, but it’s been interesting to experience my hobby on a more professional level. Thank you for all your support.

I ordered this at the time, but of course it didn't make it past the 3000 orders in time. A great pity. I thought it was the most interesting of all 9 of the sets. If the instructions are ever available I would be interested in getting them.

This Steam Powered Science set never made it to production, unfortunately. It was my favorite of the entire round-up last year.

@mojral; Go to the site Rebrickable.com, and in the search tab type "Steam Powered Science". You'll see (as of today) two results, a model of a train and EndlessAges set here. Click on the tab for EndlessAges' design. You'll probably first need to create a login before you can purchase the instructions, and might need a PayPal account to pay for it.

I'm elated that instructions will finally be available and that you've chosen to return to your original design. I've been building the Clockwork Menagerie with my own creative twists for piece/color combinations that don't exist. Please continue with your creative designs!

@EndlessAges is correct, Rebrickable displays the parts list. They also let you export the inventory to a BrickLink wanted list, which makes it very easy to keep track of what you have and what you still need to buy.

@mudmucker BrickLink has arranged for us to post our instructions on Rebrickable, but the designers are solely responsible for creating them and putting them up for sale. If I remember right, Rebrickable instructions have a parts list you can look at before purchasing the instructions. I have a few fine details to polish up, but I expect to have it up for sale by the end of next week. @Hahussain I like the enthusiasm! Still, 430+ full color pages is a bit much for my printer to handle!

An update on the instructions: I've been working hard on getting the instructions ready for sale. I had a first draft ready about a week ago and was hoping to have it up by now. But, after looking it over, I realized my beginning work needed some major editing, so it's going to be another few weeks before they're ready.

I would also support instructions for any iteration you went with. For practicality, I have a slight preference for the most up-to-date version, since that would be using parts currently available through LEGO and would hopefully keep the total price somewhat manageable. :)

I would love to build this or the Clock Menagerie but I priced it out & it's approximately $2600. And that's including taking out all the pieces I have already. I also like all your Flight works but alas, unless the price for parts comes down under $500. I'll just have admire it from the computer. I'm a novice and only have about 1628 unique parts.

@EndlessAges; I kinda liked the sideway pull to open up the telescope's roof instead of the top pull system (the original system I assume) seen in the video. The design of the waterwheel in the video looks cooler over the waterwheel in the latest pictures. I liked the change to rounded windows over the angular ones on the outer wall of telescope building as in the latest pictures. Chrome metallic pipes look cooler, but I assume those pieces are much harder to come by (and more expensive) then the bley-colored pipes seen in the latest pictures. And lastly, the completely black light poles look in my eyes more elegant then those with the grey screw piece seen in the video. Personally, I wouldn't bother with including the minifig parts in the main file.

In other news, I'll have more leeway with building techniques in the digital instructions. My thought was to bring the design closer to the model used in my videos with the hinged walkway and would like to here any opinions on what you all would be interested in buying.

I've spoken with BrickLink about the order confirmations. There were changes from the previous round, but this set will definitely not be produced and the emails you received are just system lags.

Mine shows being shipped by May 31, 2022 (today). They may not make that deadline! However, the charge did disappear from my account. Yes, I really wish they had given all of the sets the 30+ days to get funded. Like Pronto555 said below, how many people were at work, and unable to pre-order. This one would have easily made it, probably within the first day.

My set still stands in backorder (even dated to 30-5-22, as are my 3 other orders from the sets that did make it.) so i really really hope Lego will change their opinion/rules and produce this most gorgeous set of the whole round! 3k was reached so fast it is not even funny, and this set was (unlike the others who where trailing far behind) quite close in the race for fifth, another timezone with some other steampunk pop culture and this set would have won. I want it and i want/ask/beg Lego to produce it!

@EndlessAges: Many many thanksf for your work and effort to let us share in this amazing set. After seeing the whole Flightworks series, I have become a huge fan. To me it is really tragic that it is so difficult to have these actually produced. Of course, this is heavily biased, but I suspect there would definitely be enough people interested to make it well worth it. It is so very disappointing that Lego does not seem very interested itself, maybe others will.
