Hi everyone!

We made it! Castle in the Forest is now a real set. I really want to thank you all! Thank you so so much!

This is really my child dream coming true. But even more, this is a success that went beyond anyone's imagination. Thanks to you all, trying to connect at the same time to purchase your set, a glitch made it possible to preorder 10000 copies of the castle in the forest instead of 5000.

I'm really happy that this could lead to some positive changes to the program. Not only for myself, but also for the other designers, and for the fans who now have received more opportunities to be able to get one of their favorite sets.

I especially want to give thanks to all the members of the BrickLink team. You are just a small team compared to the LEGO Group yet you have done a huge and incredible job for us all. It's really not easy to launch such a big project and to work with so many designers and on so many projects at the same time. I'm very very grateful for all your work.

I wish you all a very good time building your set!

Project description :

Welcome back to the middle ages with this project "the Castle in the Forest".

I'm very proud to present to you this beautiful forestmen castle. This model has almost 2000 parts and is build in three sections. Each part is inspired by one of the forestmen sets from the 90s.

The model has a lot of play features : it has a gate door that opens, a secret escape passage through a fake fire place, there is a trapdoor. Many parts open up to allow you to get inside.

There many details inside : a bed, tables, a cooking place, many candles and lots of extra weapons to defend your castle !

The model has 6 minifigures : 3 forestmen, 1 peasant and 2 black falcon knights.

There are also some animals included : an owl, a horse, a bird and a frog.

Check out my YouTube video to see how everything works !

This model will come with some stickers. One of the stickers is placed inside the castle and it represents a painting of a forestmen with his bow. This is an homage to my first and favourite forestmen minifigure. On his face I added a small beard like I have myself.

I really want to give a big thanks to Nick Royer, the designer of the "space troopers" project. Nick has done an awesome job helping me with the designs of the stickers. Don't forget to check out his project !

About the designer :

I'm Daniel VAN ZONNEVELD, I am 37 years old and I live in France.

Around the age of 4 I discovered the Lego bricks and very quickly it became my favourite hobby.

In the early 90s I got a small set with 6 castle minifigures including my first 2 forestmen. When I got those I knew I had found my favourite minifigures. Especially the forestmen with the yellow plume who had a bow and arrow.

I wanted to find more forestmen sets, but at that time these sets were already retiring. I could get my hands on only one other forestmen set. Since then, I hoped that the forestmen theme would one day return...

A dream I didn’t really expect to come true. But not only it is really coming true, I'm designing the set myself to make it come true. That's just beyond words !

@povoq, do you have any plans to resubmit the castle of brickwood forest? Or maybe make the instructions available online? I'd love to add it to my collection at some point!

I've submitted my project. It's done !!! I can say It's a miracle for me having been able to finish in time. All this time I was unsure if I could make it. I've created some nice images with special lightning for the candles and torches. Maybe the black background wasn't the best idea. We'll see. Now I can finally open my Christmas presents and watch The Chosen series, but first I'll get some sleep. Zzzzzzz

Just received my bricklink order today. I finished the spiral staircase and ... it's just a little too fragile for me ;( To reinforce it I have to use a different technique for the central axle. I move the axle in both directions and I change the number of steps.. And now that makes me change the floors... And the instuctions. And my physical model... This is a nightmare. On top of that I'm sick. So I decided ... NEVER GIVE UP !!!

@Povoq, you have some really good ideas, and clearly have worked very hard! It is most unfortunate that the siege tower is out. As you mentioned in previous posts, it needs to be big to fit the walls properly, so perhaps a siege tower becomes its own creation...and hopefully set. It could be like Lego castle 6090 Royal Knights Castle, and 6078 Royal Drawbridge. Separate sets, and can be used on their own, but they fit together perfectly... Just an idea :)

@povoq - just keep hanging on with instruction. Your castle models are just fantastic. I love them. Your castle in the forest is so much better than Lego castle 10305. I am sure - you do it a second time! I vote for your creation that’s quite clear!

ups and downs :) I'm working like crazy, 4 or 5 hours every night. I needed a break. I'm better now, the model is all in steps already. I'm working on the page design while building my physical model at the same time. I'm on page 67 out of 1232 .... ... 1232 !!!???

@lorikep I think its better to make it a little less expensive. A small siege tower would be useless. Instead of siege equipment I could just add a 4th horse. In the 90s we got 4 horses with some of the castles, that looked really cool. I've asked fo the barding part and the dark brown saddle. I hope they will become available. If not, i prefer a brick build saddle then a brick build barding.

I like the Siege Tower, but hopefully it should be a bit cheaper without it. You could also have a battering ram if you want a smaller siege equipment. It might also look nice if one of the knights had barding. (also from the ideas book) You could have a sticker design on the flag.

@ povoq What if you made it a slightly smaller siege tower? The lego book of ideas had a pretty nice looking siege tower that was low in the part count. You'd probably want to make it taller, but it might get you in under the part limit.

I don't really know what I can share. I'd better not show too much. Here is a picture of what you will NOT get... I guess I'll delete the siege tower. Thats 350 parts less and solves the problem. If my castle gets selected I will make free instructions for this one, it's a nice addition to the castle and the drawbridge goes perfectly to one of the walls.

@lorikep As much animals as possible. I've already put in a rat, and a squirrel. Or maybe 2 squirrels playing together. I won't use the cow, because I wont add a chariot or a farmer. I don't have any place to put the owl so not sure about that yet. For the female figure I guess your're right. 36036 isn't working when it's not the same color as the torso. The dark brown legs look better then the others. Blue and sand green isn't the best. I tried some others and black or olive green look also better. I think a simple plain black looks the best. There are not too many female hair parts that fit the medieval style so I think I agree and go with your suggestion and go for 27186 in dark brown.

The figs look nice! I like the kid and the horses. For the female peasant, maybe you could use 27186 as not to use the same hair twice. I think it looks medieval enough. She also looks fine with regular legs in my opinion. :)

@lorikep What do you think of hair 21269? Hair 21269 + neck collar 26066 might not fit. I don't have that part so I can't try. / I never liked part 37614 that much, but I can let you convince me ;). / 30273 I don't really like, it's not part of my lego nostalgia ;) / 2594 & 2587 only as extras, parts are included but not on any figs. / There should be no female soldiers in my opinion, but I can use torso 973pb4839c01 for another female fig. She doesn't look bad I think. / I use hair 92746 twice but's it's not too obvious. / Hair 23186 is a little too modern for me but I can follow your idea because that really gives this set "the bad guy", and I like that. / Also wanted a kid. that makes it one less forestmen this time. I might be a forestment fan, I don't like the fact that they all have the same torsos. / Not sure about the kings accessories yet. Some extra weapons and shields in the castle but maybe not a forestmen shield.

@ JoseArcadio I'll have to fill up the rooms. I'm not very good with furniture for the rooms but the guards will have a place to rest. As for the roofs they are just black slopes.. But I think it looks good.

@JoseArcadio The spiral staircase is still there, and yes, a lot of pieces go in that staircase. The castle is going to be huge, a similar kitchen and throne room. No house at the left but a combination of houses at the top. I've a hard time to count how many rooms there are. There are 4 doors just for the tan houses at the top. There are stairs and passages everywhere. I counted twice and I'm not sure if there are 12 or 14 window just at the top. I'm getting lost in my own castle. ;)

@povoq Also is there a barracks? I don't remember one being in the old design, but just a little space with a bed or two (bunk-bed to really save space) would give the guards a place to rest when not on watch:)

@povoq So were you able to save pieces on the tower roof redesign? Also have you given any thought to just replacing the spiral staircase with a straighter one like castle in the forest? That might also save some pieces, but then we wouldn't have the fun spiral staircase:(

@Lorikep. The trone next to the curtain is red with gold. But maybe I'll have to make them blue according the black falcon faction. Blue + black with some silver might look nice. I'm going to try that.

@Lorikep The lion knights and the forestmen have their castles. It's going to be a black falcon castle. That creator set 31120 is just for kids, I don't count that one. ;) I try to make it a little bit like set 6074. Instead of yellow it will be tan. It will be tan both on the entrance and the house at the top. I was thinking about having a couple of stickers just for the flag, It's the exact same sticker we had for the flag in the castle in the forest. On the pointy tower it looks just like set 6074.

if you want the curtain to be less ninjago-ish, you could do blue instead of dark red to fit the crusaders aesthetic.

@JoseArcadio. Thanks for the advice ! As I try out different things I get more ideas. The castle is going to be huge. I knew I was going over 3000 part but I'm getting close to the 4000 limit now. The spiral stairs take up a lot. I made the shape a little less complex, No weird angles on the left side. I hoped to save some parts but I have to improve the back side. On my Lego ideas project the back was just a straight wall. Now I hope it turns out to be as good as the front.

@povoq You could try something like "stained glass" or maybe a small recessed space holding a miniature statue or a sword or something. Or a banner. As for walls, you might be able to reduce pieces and improve stability on the tower by replacing the black conical roof with battlements. I love the roofed look, but battlements might just be easier. Also, if you're still fighting with the tudor walls, you could try a simple stone wall with the roof on the inside. If you google "Athenry Castle" you'll see what I mean. Keep it up! I'm super excited to see what you come up with!

I've made a sort of curtain for the throne room. There is a secret passage behind it. It's size is 8x8 studs with 1x8 tiles at the bottom and top. I've made this. There is an interesting building technique with 1x1x3 bricks upside down. But I'm not too shure about the aesthetic. What do you think? Is it too ninjago-ish? I could also try out some mosaic painting of even something in 2 layers. But it has to be something recognizable on 8x8 studs.

I'm still working on the walls, I haven't figured out jet where the houses will be and what size. I'm thinking about making a huge siege tower, inpired by the one I made for my first lego ideas castle, but bigger. By doing this, instead of a drawbridge for the castle you will get a drawbridge on the siege tower. The gate of the castle looks looks very nice, and it can be closed and secured with bars. It's going to be really nice.
