it today and it is a set that I have not been able to verify today due to being
at work. Why do some sellers do this

Very sorry to hear some sellers do it since for some weird reason they feel
they have to is my best guess. I wish bricklink would fix that bug so sellers
can’t.

Just because you don't know the reason it's there doesn't mean it's
a bug. If a seller shouldn't mark orders complete, why is the ability to
do so enabled? I've asked the question many times on the forum and never
got a real response, just guesses and "You shouldn't mark orders complete!".

That question has been answer many times. Almost 100% guaranteed it’s a bug or
such. Bricklink is by no means a “error free” website and considering at times
it doesn’t even let you upload image formats it accepts it’s by no means a stretch
to think there are other bugs such as letting sellers mark orders as complete
Other question asked. How do you know it’s a bug and not a feature?
Answer. Since doing so directly violates bricklink rules
(Please don’t take the is as an aggressive response, I’m just trying to explain)

Completed - Package received, contents verified, the order is completed.
Which simply is not possible for a seller to do unless 1. They confirm that the
package has actually arrived (which tracking is no guarantee so you have to physically
have the package). And 2. Open the package and confirm that everything is present
that was ordered.

It depends which of the badly written rules you want to follow, as this page
says the seller can set the order status to complete. So to me, it is a feature,
not a bug. Not a good feature, but I don't think saying it violates the rules
is correct when in at least one page BL says it is allowed. There is no violation
if it says it is allowed.

indeed that makes it confusing and make me agree that it might not be a bug however
they state a seller *can* do it however for a seller to do it is simply not possible
given the rules given for the actual item so its possible that may have been
an accident or such but in general its still a very unfortunate thing when sellers
do it

It is possible, again depending on viewpoint due to the wording, as it doesn't
say the buyer has to verify the order.
It says: Completed - Package received, contents verified, the order is completed.
If the seller has proof of delivery that, for example, PayPal would accept as
proof the buyer got their package and the seller verified the order contents
before shipping then from their view, they could think the order is complete
according to BL's wording. Again a small wording change to "contents
verified by buyer" clears it up (if what nearly everyone believes is the
intention is the intention).
Even leaving it as it is would be fine if, where they say the seller can mark
it complete, they add something along the lines of "if confirmed complete
by the buyer" implying the buyer messaging the seller or leaving (positive)
feedback is enough to confirm this.
It would even be nice if, when a buyer leaves positive feedback, the order was
automatically marked complete. One less thing to do for the buyer (or seller,
if they are so inclined).

Indeed, it is one of those badly written (and implemented) things that unless
they clear it up, it will never be cleared up. And if it is not cleared up, there
will always be speculation. Like the other controversial one, whether new minifigs
can be sold assembled was meant to allow sellers to sell only assembled figures
that LEGO assembled as new, or whether the intention was to allow sellers to
build them first and still sell them as new. They have never cleaned up the wording
to be definitive and so there will always be speculation as to what the intention
is/was.
I guess that neither of these are that important that BL feels the need to clear
them up. Presumably not enough sellers mark orders complete to make buyers complain
too much and similarly not enough sellers assemble minifigures without warning
buyers they do this to make buyers complain too much for BL do something about
it. The site works good enough so it is good enough, with no need to change.

It's a seller guess: "I guess I shipped the very proper items in the
awaited condition and the exact quantity to the right person, and it timely arrived
as shipped with nothing lost or broken in transit... SOOOOOOO, as I'm sure
of all this I feel entitled to state this Order being Completed, unilaterally
viewed from my side, and who gives a brick the superfluous review and opinion
of the Buyer! Ha!"
Wake up, we're in 2024.
And anyway, with this status technically allowed due to spaghetti or an old weird
local custom, PayPal and Credit Card will side the Buyer up to 6 months after.
And whatever the status is Shipped, Received or Completed, it doesn't matter.
So the other point is, it doesn't change anything so why would bother?
Ship it, file it, forget it!

it is very relevant. many websites have "bugs" that get labelled as a
feature and then left alone and never changed. in this case its quite possible
|
| Other question asked. How do you know it’s a bug and not a feature?
Answer. Since doing so directly violates bricklink rules
|

since a seller cannot confirm its all there after the package has arrived. even
if you allow for the theorietical case of a buyer messaging the seller to confirm
that it was complete for the seller to then mark it as complete that would be
a 1 in a million case and not a standard. in every reasonable understanding
of the use of
"Completed - Package received, contents verified, the order is completed."
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=41#:~:text=Completed%20%2D%20Package%20received%2C%20contents%20verified%2C%20the%20order%20is%20completed.
it is understood that this is something that is done by the buyer.
on a side note, it says "package received" it does not say "package
delivered". I'm not sure if the grammar is different in the USA but received
means
"be given, presented with, or paid (something)"
and does not mean the same as delivered
delivered is when something is delivered to the address provided but just since
something is delivered it does not mean it has been received. if I get a package
in the main via Canada Post then it gets "delivered" to my local mail
box. I have not received my package. I might not "receive" it for an
extended period of time if I dont get my mail every day.
so when reasonably reading
"Completed - Package received, contents verified, the order is completed."
a seller cannot know if a package has been received as only the customer can
confirm that and the seller cannot know if the contents have been verified (aside
from extremely improbable cases where a buyer just says to the seller they have
verified the contents but then never updated the status).

agreed, another reason that points to it not being an intended feature. if sellers
can simply take away every buyer's means of recourse against a seller (via
bricklink itself) it seems highly unlikely its the intended use of it.

Of course, sellers should not be able to do this, but that's harsh don't
you think? It's not like BrickLink sellers get a manual on best practices
for sellers when they sign up. I would at least send them one communication informing
them that it is not the expected behavior.

Because they think that once it is delivered it is complete. Least favourite
the store and leave negative feedback if it bothers you.

I won't leave negative feedback. I decided after this I won't be leaving
them any feedback...

Leave negative feedback over something so trivial? Are you serious?

If it really bothers them, then yes. If it isn't such a big deal, then no.

I think leaving a negative is going way to far. For all we know the seller may
be new so may think it is his responsibility to mark is as complete once it is
shipped. Or, it could just be that is the way the seller likes to do things.
It is not like if there is a problem with the order that the buyer can't
take action against the store just because it is marked as complete. They can
still contact the store and if necessary they can file an NSS and or file a PayPal
claim.
I know once I mark an order as shipped I never look back to see if it is marked
as complete but that is just me, each person is different. I just think to leave
a negative for that would be going to far.

Yes, but the point of feedback is for a buyer (in this case) to let other members
know how well a transaction went. If they feel that the transaction needed improvement
they can leave negative feedback. That is the wording from the feedback help
page. If they are that incensed by a seller telling them the order is complete
when it isn't then they can leave whatever feedback they like. Alternatively
they can write to the seller to complain about it, or start a forum thread to
let off some steam before acting more rationally. Of course, other sellers also
have the right to stoplist the buyer if they feel the buyer is too fragile in
their behaviour and this probably helps mediate such knee jerk reactions when
leaving feedback.
Personally, it doesn't bother me if a seller does it as I file an order I've
placed once it is checked and complete and even if they mark it as complete,
I can still access the order page and do whatever I want with it irrespective
of the status.

Problem: sometimes you simply cannot.
After 5 days or 7 days (don't remember) it can't be reverted.

Can only be done if it was changed to complete within the past like 24-72 hours
or something

I caught it within the time period and went ahead and changed it back. Thank
you.

Perhaps seller doesn't know that if he marks it "complete", it also
changes the order status on your end. From their point of view, they completed
their duty "shipped it" and so, marked it as complete in order to keep
track of their orders.
you can put it back to "shipped" if you wish.
If a seller mark my order "complete", it would not bother me at all.
