| I found a minifigure head and wanted to know to which set it belongs.
The code inside reads 3626 10-42. I tried many combinations with no luck.
In the end I had to scroll though all of the 3626 heads and finally found it
3626cpb3290...
No mention whatsoever of 10-42.
Since it's not the first time I search for a part by it's LEGO number
without result, I wanted to know what is the right way to do it?

It is best to search for idnumber*, so 3626* as this will pick up all the variants
and printed parts and so on. The 10-42 is usually a number indicating the mould
ID and/or the location of the part in the mould or on the sprue and not the element
ID.

Yes, there are many heads. If searching for parts like that don't use the
number. Instead, click on market, then choose solor. Then choose minifigure head.
That will cut it down, although there will still be large lists if it is yellow
or light nougat. You can then start entering terms that describe the face, and
using dual or -dual is helpful if it is two sided or one sided.

Hello,
The hyphenated numbers are not used anywhere in our Catalog. They do not indicate
the part, but the mold used to make the part. There are many, many variations
and they are not tracked in any database I am aware of.
The easiest way to find a minifig head is to start at the Color Guide. Choose
your color and then click on the Minifigures, Head category.
Sort the results by date if you have a sense of how old your part might be.
Then start adding search parameters: Blocked, Hollow, Vented (Unfortunately,
they are taking this tool away from us in a few weeks. )
Then key words:
Dual if it has 2 faces. -Dual if it does not
Female or -Female
Glasses or -Glasses
Keep plugging away until you have narrowed down your results. THEN scan through
the remainder.
Good luck!
~Jen

Mold numbers are not covered in Bricklink. But when it comes to minifigures this
is my way to go:
Type 3626* (do add he asterisk!) then a space and then try additional words like
grim/smile/ or a colour name. This would reduce the number of items in the search
result.
For all other minifig identification issues I suggest goatleg: http://www.goatleg.com/
