Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 31120 Name: Medieval Castle
*
31120-1 (Inv) Medieval Castle
1408 Parts, 4 Minifigures, 2021
Sets: Creator: Model: Castle: Black Falcons

* Change 1 Part Medium Nougat {4738a Container, Treasure Chest Bottom with Slots in Back to 4738 Container, Treasure Chest Bottom (Undetermined Type)}

Comments from Submitter:
Item number should be 4738c, but that doesn't seem to exist in Bricklink (it does in Rebrickable).

This request will not be accepted.

As you stated, 4738c is a Rebrickable item, not a BrickLink one. Therefore, the
inventory is correct according to BrickLink catalog entries.

Cheers,
Randy

Ok. Thanks for the reply. It does beg the question of why does Bricklink not
add the new item, if it's actually different to the previous one? Why is
there a difference between the two sites? Why does Bricklink not take the Rebrickable
item and change it to a Bricklink one? I assume this is for more pieces than
the one I've noticed. This will be a problem for users wanting to build want
lists from rebrickable xml. They won't find the right brick and the whole
xml won't get imported. There's a workaround, but it's awkward.

Talking of awkward, the process for submitting an ICR is REALLY convoluted. Just
thought you'd want to know.

Finally, I don't want to come off as intentionally obtuse - I really would
like to know how things are catalogued on here, vs Rebrickable. Also, you guys
do great work!

Cheers, Matt

Ok. Thanks for the reply. It does beg the question of why does Bricklink not
add the new item, if it's actually different to the previous one?

There is a lot of work involved in splitting an entry on BrickLink due to the
marketplace and set inventories implications. Having said that, this entry may
or may not be split in the future.

Why is there a difference between the two sites?

They are two different sites started and maintained by different fans with differing
ideas of how to catalog things. Brickset, BrickOwl, LDraw, etc. do things differently,
also. There is no global standard for how to categorize, label, and number all
of the things that constitute a LEGO items database.

Why does Bricklink not take the Rebrickable item and change it to a Bricklink one?

BrickLink has its own systems and intellectual property that are separate from
Rebrickable. Just as other sites cannot just take information from BrickLink,
we do not take information from other sites.

I assume this is for more pieces than the one I've noticed.

Of course.

This will be a problem for users wanting to build want lists from rebrickable xml.
They won't find the right brick and the whole xml won't get imported. There's a
workaround, but it's awkward.

This has been a known issue since the dawn of all of the different fan sites.
As stated above, there is no global standard for this stuff.

Talking of awkward, the process for submitting an ICR is REALLY convoluted. Just
thought you'd want to know.

I have been here a long time. I know the process is less than straightforward,
but getting developer resources to change and update the process is not likely
to happen.

Finally, I don't want to come off as intentionally obtuse - I really would
like to know how things are catalogued on here, vs Rebrickable. Also, you guys

Things are cataloged here according to the guidelines that BrickLink maintains,
and a lot of that information is found in the Catalog help pages:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?topicID=21

I have no idea how Rebrickable catalogs things, because we are not Rebrickable.

Cheers,
Randy

Thanks Randy - I appreciate the explanations. Your first sentence about the work
involved in splitting entries does sum it up well I think (especially the 'may
or may not be split in the future' part). I did wonder if it was conflicting
standards with no easy way to line everything up. I didn't think about IP
limitations, but that's a good point. Thanks for the link for catalog guidelines
- I'll take a look at that.
Hope everything is going well for you. Take care.

Cheers,
Matt
