Good morning all, we’ll, morning here in Florida. I’m a retired 30 year LEGO
employee and have about a half dozen sets that I’ve moved from a closet in CT
to a closet in FL. I’ve realized that the closet is not the proper place for
these items. They need to be in the hands of a collector who will appreciate
them. So, soon I will place them for sale. This will be my first selling attempt
and I’m looking to the community to give me some advice on the best way to market
and price these items. I’ve looked at the price history, and I have at least
one item that has no history, in other words very exclusive or rare. Not sure
how to set a price. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome!

First thing, you are going to need to enable Onsite Paypal to sell to any US
state that collects sales tax and any EU country that collects VAT. (most of
them)

You can get some sense of set value from other searching other sales sites if
we don't have data here. Searching for completed listings is very helpful.

Without that, check the value and rarity of other similar sets produced in the
same way or at the same time. If you are patient, start your items high and then
slowly adjust your prices lower til the market finds you.

Good luck,
Jen

Some thoughts about selling high-value collectables or rare items in general~

It’s important that you get them listed and exposed to what is a much smaller
subset of prospective buyers. If price is hindering that, get the ball rolling
by taking the number you'd feel good about accepting, and double it. You
can always adjust down as you figure-it-out, or reality catches up.

You’ll find that collectors with deep pockets are serious about the game and
have less qualms about contacting you with offers, if your price is too far afield
market value. On the other hand, if it turns out that you significantly under
priced and it sells? Well, I guess you can always try and “feel good about” it

Keep in mind with truly rare items, it’s you the seller that’s in the
driver’s seat when setting price. The market value for such things is nearly
all premium. In other words, you set the market, more so with little to no price
history. Meaning a real "price history" not just here on BL.

It’s obviously more facetted than my abbreviated input, but it’s a start. Though
it's only my take, I do understand where you’re coming from, having been
there a few times myself. In fact, I'm focused on it now, elsewhere.
