| Hi,
I am working on a MOC in which I am using Ice Picks (#30193). I noticed that
there seems to be some slight differences between the light bluish gray and the
dark bluish gray versions of these elements and I think they should be split
into two separate entries in the BrickLink catalog. The differences I noticed
are as follows:
Years in production
"Old" Dark Gray: 1998-2003*
Dark Bluish Gray: 2004-2010
Light Bluish Gray: 2013-2019
*I don't have any "Old Bluish Gray" Ice Picks on hand, but I assume that
they are the same mold as the Dark Bluish Gray.
Handle
Dark Bluish Gray: Six ridges, no pin hole on end.
Light Bluish Gray: Three ridges, pin hole on end.
Ferrule
Dark Bluish Gray: Shorter, but slightly larger in diameter resulting in friction
when placed in an open stud.
Light Bluish Gray: Longer, but slightly smaller in diameter resulting in no friction
when placed in an open stud.
Thanks!
Steven

| P.S. I have acquired an "Old Dark Gray" Ice Pick and it is the same as the new
Dark Gray.

| I just want to follow up on this request.
I realize that, as is stated in the BrickLink help files, "Splitting variants,
especially part variants, involves significant work for sellers, buyers, administrators,
and contributors. Therefore, variant splits may not happen frequently." I believe
that that is not the case here, however, since the two different molds do not
have overlapping colors. Mold A only appears in "Old" Dark Gray and in Dark
Bluish Gray, while Mold B only appears in Light Bluish Gray. Therefore, a seller's
inventory is already segregated.

This has been completed because all other tools with ribbed handles already had
separate entries in the catalog.
Old entry:
New entries:
The inventories for the old entry will not all be immediately switched over to
the new entries as there is some crossover in the timelines of the molds. The
Dark Gray versions are all 30193, so those can be changed. However, I have evidence
of Light Bluish Gray 30193 existing for sure in the UCS Red Five X-Wing, so we
can't be sure that all inventories containing Light Bluish Gray are all 18738.
Cheers,
Randy
