| I've recently put together a couple of MOCs and ordered all the pieces. I've
created pdf instructions and was wondering if anyone has printed their instructions
before. I found Smartpress but I'd like to hear if anyone has tried alternative
methods.

I used to sell MOCs and I printed instructions on standard letter paper using
an inkjet printer. If you want instructions like the ones LEGO makes, then you
will probably have to use a printing service of some sort.

I shipped a little starfighter to Poland for one of my fans, so I had to put
the pieces in separate bags and print out instructions. I wound up taking screenshots
of each building step in LDD along with the needed pieces sitting beside the
MOC as it developed. It took 55 steps, some picture editing, and maybe 10 sheets
of paper.
The bags I numbered not like TLG does, but to match the step numbers in the instructions.
It arrived in Poland, and he built it just fine. I gained a new appreciation
for instructions design, and had to restrict each step to maybe 6 parts max,
and often less than that, and also had to include turning insignia to indicate
which direction the MOC was facing. Arrows pointing into recessed spaces also
helped.
