| Does anyone have experience dealing with old Dark Red from 2001-2008? Is it brittle?
I’ve only had four modern Dark Red parts break, but I don’t own enough old Dark
Red to know if that color is as brittle.

| The dark red and also other colours like pearl gold and red brown had a period
not so long ago of brittle bricks. I've had too many breaks in those colours
for it to be coincidence. Even had minifigure arms splintering when you try to
remove them. Lego admin confirmed there was a problem and is now rectified. They
replaced some of my broken bits. Older bricks I've found are the usual Lego
quality.

Afaik, it was around 2012 when all the browns (reddish brown, dark brown, new
dark red) were horrific? I remember seeing a post about a copy of 9474 where
almost all the brown parts were broken fresh out of the box.
Some info on those bad batches here:

On a related note, I know there's been "brittle blue" parts from
07, as I have one from that year. So frail :c

It can be terribly brittle. I lost a fair number of dark red plates when disassembling
a Lego Star Wars Republic Cruiser (7665) and a few more on another SW set. Luckily
I could replace all of them fairly cheaply on BrickLink.
I've lost far more dark red parts than reddish brown (brittle brown), despite
having more reddish brown than dark red parts. Dark blue is another colour that
is brittle - although, tbf I don't recall having any db breakages.
The real brittle ones can just crumble in your fingers without any stress.

I am currently in the process of disassembling that exact same set. Thus far,
nothing has shattered. Hoping the quarter cylinders survive this process.

I was lucky - it was only plates that broke.

This copy has a few parts in both old and new Dark Red. The quarter cylinders
are all new Dark Red, but 99% of the plates and bricks are the older shade. Luckily,
everything has survived the disassembly process. Did your copy have any new Dark
Red parts?
This particular copy appears to be from a very late production run. I wasn’t
aware that the 30652s come in both old and new Dark Red. My 2008 copy of 7048
only has old Dark Red, so the transition must have occurred halfway throughout
2008.

TBH I can't remember - this was a few years ago now. It definitely has (some)
newer dark red parts now though!

My phone impression is that the heating cooling profile on the injection molding
machine was somehow involved. Just a hunch tho.

As far as I know from a Lego employee, at that time the New Dark Red and Reddish
Brown parts were stored at the top row in the warehouse, there the temperature
was higher during the day versus the night as it was exactly below the ceiling.
They now have better insulation on the roof and don't keep stock too much
time in the top rows.

I separate the shades of Dark Red in my store, and I've built tons of '00s
and '10s sets. In my experience, Old Dark Red can be brittle, but it's
brittle far less often than New Dark Red from around 2010-2014 (which is the
same period with very brittle Reddish Brown).

Thanks to your store, I have confirmation that the cylinder quarters exist in
both shades. The reformulation of this color coincides with the beginning of
the brittle period, so my guess is that the darker ones in my 7665 are more likely
to break under pressure.

| I've separated 3 shades of Dark Red but can't catch the offender.
they don't shatter in my hands
any clues? trasparency... reflectivity... glow under UV, any?
