| Please remove the word “Trooper” from Minifigs (sw0492), (sw0194), (sw1146),
(sw0481), (sw0202), (sw0380), (sw1003), (sw0528), (sw1206), (sw0221), (sw0837),
(sw0629), (sw0502), (sw0609), (sw0491), and (sw0438).
While names such as “Clone Trooper Commander” or “Clone Trooper Pilot” are technically
acceptable, the overuse of the word both unnecessarily inflates name-length and
causes search issues (namely, that the search term “Clone Trooper” yields results
other than standard Clones). In my view, “Clone” is sufficient to ensure that
all Minifigs are listed together, and that all can be found easily by searching.

Please also remove "Wars" in "Star Wars"?
I mean, too bad for people searching "Trooper", don't you think so?

I am not sure what you are trying to say, since the comparison that you are making
is not analogous.

Not everyone on BrickLink is a Star Wars expert and knows the difference between
the different types of clones. Is it redundant? Perhaps. But it's not really
a big deal either way.

In my OP, I acknowledged that names like “Clone Trooper Pilot” were correct;
my issues are with their redundancy, their contribution to the inflation of already-long
names, and their awkwardness when paired with the name of a character (e.g. “Clone
Trooper Captain Rex”).

The other terms that I have added are necessary and helpful, in my view, but
you make a fair point. I can compromise on "Trooper" being included in the titles
of generic Clones Pilots and Officers (Captain, Commander, etc), but I would
prefer if we kept it out of the names of specific characters, since it reads
awkwardly to me.
BTW, why was my change to put the MagnaGuard into "Star Wars Episode 3" rejected?
My categorisation of that figure was in-line with my other recategorisations
to put designs into the categories in which they first appeared, so I am not
sure how this is different from Aayla Secura or Mace Windu. 😕

I apologize if my answer was too glib to be clear about my meaning. My point
was that people are likely to look for minifigs by the name LEGO gives them right
there on their product. If the names are distinctly different, they are going
to wonder if they are getting the right one. It should not require extensive
knowledge of the Star Wars universe. Which I totally respect, btw, having
spent time on Wookieepedia myself.
Besides, I can just see the requests pouring in to change all these names back
to their 'official LEGO' name. And we will all be reminded about how
LEGO owns BrickLink now a hundred more times. lol
Take care,
Jen

BL occupies an odd space, as it is part of TLG, but our classification system
is entirely different from LEGO's own (from colours to part and part-type
names). Additionally, we need to be able to differentiate between versions of
the same item (vehicle/vehicle type, character/occupation, etc) to an extent
that LEGO does not - And the Catalog needs to be accurate, descriptive, and searchable
(the latter two being areas that LEGO struggles with in their classifications
- See B&P!).

Out of curiosity what do you classify as a standard clone trooper? One that is
all white with black markings? Or is this still a standard clone?
Might I suggest that it may be better to add the word ‘white’ to all those that
are plain white with print so you can search ‘clone white’ only I do think all
minifigures should be given their full titles
Otherwise aren’t we just heading down the route of shortening all names such
as removing ‘Skywalker’ from Anakin/Luke or removing ‘Weasley’ from that very
large family of characters?

acceptable, the overuse of the word both unnecessarily inflates name-length and
causes search issues (namely, that the search term “Clone Trooper” yields results
other than standard Clones). In my view, “Clone” is sufficient to ensure that
all Minifigs are listed together, and that all can be found easily by searching.
|
Out of curiosity what do you classify as a standard clone trooper? One that is all white with black markings?
|
Unnamed and without a specific function (Officer/Pilot/Gunner/etc).
| Or is this still a standard clone?
|
Yes. That is a generic Clone Trooper from a unit commanded by Jedi Master Eeth
Koth and Clone Captain Lock (in the EU/Legends, the unit was called “Horn Company”,
but that name is no longer Canon) - See attached images.
| Might I suggest that it may be better to add the word ‘white’ to all those that are plain white with print so you can search ‘clone white’ only I do think all minifigures should be given their full titles
|
Nearly all Clone Troopers have at least some white on their armour, so
that would not be a particularly accurate search term (“Clone Shiny” would be
better, as the unmarked Clones are colloquially referred to as “Shinies” in-universe).
More importantly, not all generic Clone Troopers are all-white, as units have
unique markings (e.g. 501st). I am currently just not including any unit designation
in the names of plain white Clone Troopers, as I see that as the best way of
differentiating amongst names.
| Otherwise aren’t we just heading down the route of shortening all names such as removing ‘Skywalker’ from Anakin/Luke or removing ‘Weasley’ from that very large family of characters?
|
No - quite the opposite, in fact: I began renaming Clone Minifigs specifically
because not all figures that depicted Clones had the search term “Clone” in the
name, and because there was no structure or organisation to their names. I have
been adding information to the titles, such as the Minifig’s unit, their armour
Phase, facial expression, printing details, and other useful/searchable terms.

Not everyone here is a loremaster, Clone Trooper (Rank/Unit) would suffice, and
if there's variations in print, list that, but there's no need for the
facial expression or phase as the phases are easily distinguishable, and most
Clone faces are included in the catalog photo

I think the problem is searchability. Not everyone on BrickLink is a Star Wars
expert, but a lot of people are and they would like to be able to easily search
the catalog to find a specific minifigure. Ideally, BrickLink would have a tag
system so that all of the relevant details (rank, unit, phase, facial expression,
etc.) would be included in the tags, but BrickLink doesn't have that so we
end up with some unwieldy item names like

No, it doesn't add to the searchability... but it's an assembly of parts.
Minifigure, Torso, Assembly names describe the torso, the arms, and the hands.
In this instance, the pattern on the torso and the arms were described in the
same manner. Sometimes redundancy is necessary for accuracy.
Here's another example:

Oh, yes, I understand that, just wondering if it's completely necessary here
since there's already an explicit relationship. I would think something like
"dark brown printed arms" would suffice.

It would, but then we are going to need two different naming conventions for
these parts. One where the pattern on the arms is described and one when it is
not.
If we just used a generic term for all the decorated arms then details like this
one:
wouldn't be described in the name for the torso assembly
and that would reduce its searchability.

In the case of that torso assembly I'd search for "silver" scarf "dark
brown arms". The quotes to make sure the colours I was searching for are
part of the title and including arms in one quote to apply only to arms. Any
information about patterns on the arms should come after the word not before.
Small changes that some people might think are improvements can really break
things for others.

Hey, if anyone has this torso lying around and can take a half-decent picture,
please let me know! We can add the decorated arms to the catalog and complete
the inventory for this torso.

Exactly! I have not watched any Star Wars movies (shocking, I know). The only
knowledge I have from the franchise is from Lego itself. Getting too specific
will make it a lot harder for me to find the one minifigure in the swamp of them
all as I would need to get the exact name for it to show.

It is said first in the The Clone Wars episode "Rookies", and later in
a few other episodes (not in live-action, thus far).

Yes I realize that but when I suggested 'white clone' I'm referring
to all those that are plain white like a stormtrooper with just some black/grey
print i.e no stand out coloured arms or yellow on the helmet etc etc... and whilst
it may not cover all the standard clone troopers you've mentioned its still
another way of narrowing down searching for a certain type. Most people search
by either the official name (if known) or by the way they look and I don't
think most are going to be aware of units, shinies and all that other stuff
The other thing is if someone searches for clone trooper they are likely to expect
to find them all in one place and although a clone with yellow on the helmet
is quite often intended to be a pilot to others its still just another cool looking
trooper to add to their army

| I believe I have suggested this before, but what we really do need (for minifigs,
sets, parts, everything) is a 'tag' system. Name the item as simply as
possible, short and sweet, but have assorted tags "on" the item. For example,
Rex could simply be Rex, and that's it. However, his tags are Star Wars,
clone trooper, Imperial, set number, his squadron number, and whatever else little
things people can think of, like what color head or arms (like sw1146, move
Bright Light Orange Arms, Nougat Head from title, to tags). You can then search
by name, or whatever, and it'll still be found. You can also search by tag,
and group them. Search Pilot and Imperial. Even if it's not in the NAME,
it will come up.
I agree names get long and redundant, but the information contained is still
useful.

And then there is no way to easily distinguish between all the different versions
of the SW minifigure called Rex without looking into the tags. While tags are
good, you still need descriptors to tell the difference from the name.
