Please remove the reference and link to the MSRP price. This is a new feature
that many have questioned. Although I don't think anyone has made a formal
suggestion to remove it.
I do not think this helps sales on BrickLink. On the contrary, as Tracy and others
noted, listing an MSRP that is lower than what the item sells for on BrickLink
could very well be sending buyers elsewhere, turning them off to BrickLink or
discouraging them from ordering such items here on BrickLink.
When I shop for LEGO online or in the real world at Target, TRU, WalMart and
other places, I have never seen any of these retailers list a lower MSRP alongside
their own higher price. Why in the world would they? It might make sense when
their prices are far below the MSRP, but never when prices are higher than the
MSRP.
My apologies, but I just don't see the purpose of listing the MSRP as far
as sales are concerned. It might have some minor passing appeal as a mere historical
reference for long discontinued sets, but how exactly does it help sales when
currently available sets are often priced higher here on BrickLink? Unless the
purpose is to bring down those prices? IMO, any usefulness in listing the MSRP
as a mere reference is greatly outweighed by the potential negative affect on
sales, turning off of buyers, and creating disputes between buyers and sellers
as to why a seller is charging more than the MSRP.
Profit is not a sin. It makes commerce possible. And it makes buyers able to
easily get what they want.

And, let me add this in for the CS Team that is gathering/looking at suggestions,
and maybe they will see this and be able to shine some light into why BrickLink
is now telling people to go shop at Lego.com:

prices include taxes, others don't which just makes it even that less usefull

Yes, please remove this.
Having the MSRP is bad enough, but the text that the item can be purchased online
for the MSRP is just beyond stupid. Sorry if that comments violates the new
"don't say anything bad about bricklink" rules, but I really do not know
how else to say it.
At best, it makes BrickLink sellers look bad.
At worst, it sends buyers elsewhere to make their purpose.
BrickLink, being the venue, really should not be sending traffic elsewhere away
from their own sellers.

That's what I was wondering about - WE are not allowed to STATE that other
sites have things for sale that are on BrickLink - but the Catalog now clearly
sends people there? I think that someone needs to rectify this, stat. (and

Will this MSRP also appear with entries for the Simpsons and other Collectible
Minifigures? A lot of the CM fig sets sell here for much more than the $2.99
retail price. A popular CM figure that appears only once or twice in a box of
60 often sells for 2 or 3 times MSRP, even while those CM figs are currently
available from TLG. What kind of message is BL sending to buyers when they see
an MSRP that is half what the figures are selling for here? It sure doesn't
help the sellers or make this site look better.

| Voted YES! It is understandable that a site like Brickset has this information,
as Brickset is a reference site. But for BrickLink? It doesn't make any
sense, nor does it serve any positive purpose. Unless BL is planning to become
a LEGO and Amazon affiliate.
BL's new owners appear to be confused about the identity of the site. What
gives BL's its uniqueness is that it is the largest LEGO marketplace. Period.
It doesn't have to become a reference site, news-site, blog, MOCshop or any
of that other stuff other sites are already doing just fine. BL rules its very
own, very unique, and very needed niche.
"10,000 songs in your pocket". That's it. The most brilliant advertising
ever. That' why Apple is awesome. It focuses on one thing instead of being
all over the place. The message is clear, the niche is defined, people love it.
BL's slogan should remain focused like that. It should remain The Largest
Unofficial LEGO Marketplace...

Giant YES! Remove this non-sensical feature that does nothing but harm Bricklink.
For future improvements, please stick to features/improvements that are needed
and most likely have already been suggested by veteran members that have a lot
of experience buying and selling on Bricklink and are far more involved.
I would much rather have a feature like being able to narrow down minifig body
parts (torso, legs, or assemblies of those) with a drop down color option. Countless
times newer members don't know how to narrow down a list of 100s-1000 of
torso assemblies. Having to go through Catalog tab - Colors tab - parts link
to color - part category is just too convoluted for new and inexperienced buyers
and sellers. Heck, even the help section is very minimal when it comes to new
members not knowing how to navigate all of the neat features. Just throwing out
some ideas if the BL team can't prioritize, but I am sure there are far more
pressing issues to deal with as well.

That SOME buyers may know other sites to check for better prices is not the point.
The point is that BrickLink, which is a venue for sellers to sell their items
at this site, should not be encouraging buyers to go elsewhere. It is just bad

In fairness, it WAS suggested. Why they chose this suggestion, out of all of
them, to implement is beyond me though.
And to implement it as they did, without taking into consideration WHY it had
not been implemented in the past, is also beyond me.
If they want to be a complete database site, I can see adding this information.
But I would limit to older discontinued items, where a price differential can
be expected. And the wording is just terrible.
Better text:
"When this set was released on 2010 the Manufacturers' Suggested Retail Price
was $99.99. Be advised that in the secondary market prices are determined by
supply and demand and may be significantly more than MSRP."

| I think the problem is the link to S@H, not the info itself. It's helpful
reference info. I look at MSRP at Brickset often. And why limit it just to
sets that are still on the market from LEGO? That makes no sense. Maybe have
a link on the catalog page to another page with the MSRP's from each market
when the set was new. So the info isn't on the main item page, but available
at BL, without external links. And I think your disclaimer Troy is also necessary.

From another discussion:
I think the MSRP feature was something they thought people would support as it
is asked for on occasion and is/was probably a fun coding challenge to
integrate and pull this varying information and present it in a helpful - usable
manner.
In that - it works and shows the coders can produce work - but without ever
really digging into is this information beneficial for this market question first.

| I just noticed that there are MSRP prices for many countries. Do EU members see
the MSRP for their country or the US MSRP by default?
For example, all MSRPs for the Haunted House:
http://www.bricklink.com/getMSRP.asp?itemNo=10228
If the MSRP is only shown for in-production sets, I'm guessing this move
is intended to maintain good relations with TLG, and may have been asked for
by TLG.
If the MSRP will eventually be shown for all sets, discontinued or otherwise,
my guess would be that this is part of TLG's push against resellers and that
BL is cooperating, again, to maintain good relations with TLG.

TLG has no right to demand or even ask BrickLink to show its MSRP on BrickLink.
In fact, doing so could cause legal problems for TLG. It could even be argued
that BrickLink showing these MSRPs as it currently does might be considered an
attempt to influence prices to be more in line with these MSRPs.

Having the MSRP available from within BL doesn't drive people outside of
BL. BL stores having prices significantly higher than MSRP for things that are
still in production drives people outside of BL. I say this as a buyer who refuses
to pay inflated prices + shipping for something I can order off LS@H and get
free shipping + VIP points, or something I can buy off another site for near
MSRP + a known shipping cost prior to purchasing (sometimes free shipping).

You have the luxury of ordering it for retail because you live in a country which
S@H supports.
When the Canadian dollar was strong, it was getting close to being reasonable
for me to buy something from Bricklink (some shops have MRSP because of a formalized
deal with Lego) and pay for shipping and take the chance at duty rather than
retail in Canada.
Now, it doesn't make sense, but it was close at one point.
But if you were in Australia, South Africa, Brazil, where you don't have
any S@H options. (Australia probably does, but likely really inflated)

That's an excellent point and one I underestimated. Chalk it up to my American-centric
world view. Something something 'murika.
I don't sell on BL, but I have sold some of my collectibles recently on another
site. I was shocked at the shipping prices internationally (for one item, the
shipping cost was double the cost of the item being purchased!), but no one I
was sending the items to even batted an eye.

Yes please...ditch this.
What would be more beneficial would be a " Bricklinker " price guide, BUT only
for retired and OOP sets. Buyer can instantly see how much it would cost to get
the parts needed to build that set at the current average...you could even show
min and max costing range.

Just wanted to let you know i changed my mind after some more thoughts.
In the heat of the moment of my first post, i considered the charts to be a price
chart instead of the displayed median prices on worldwide basis.
Thats were my call for more data came from.
Although i´d like the idea of recorded pricing for historical analysis
and memory oneself might forget over the years, its not the correct place to
display.
Maybe places like brickpicker or brickset are predestined for such MSRP-data.
While its a no-brainer to sellers that discountinued sets are priced (much) higher
than there original MSRP, it might not be clear to some of the unexpierinced
buyers.
Therefore all it does as result is either driving some sales away or strating
a wave of spam emials to the already overworked sellers.
Imagine, those emails with a 5 years discountinued sets selling now for 3x retail
value, which one maybe bought at 150% of the original price, and all the ones
want more discount since MSRP was way lower and whatever...
When it comes to current sets similar issues are in the line.
One who might offer a simpsons house at 250€ maybe called a greedy bastard for
charging 50€ more than retail, while the seller bought it at maybe 180-190€.
Afterall the buyers don´t see all the fees, percentages and costs and call the
seller greedy thief for he is only earning 15-20€ with that set.
Thats barely enough for a lunch menu at burger king and a starbucks coffee in
the western world while it might occur as daily wage in the eastern world.
All it brings is anger, misunderstandung and bad blood.
So, i support the removal of it now, too.

| I understand and agree withh all the reasons that people want this removed.
But I don't think it should be abandoned. It should just be moved over to
a part of BrickLink accessible only to "premium" members (who would pay a monthly
fee).

| Hello everybody,
votes YES!!
Let me just try to collect and comment some of the arguments - saying before
that our main business here at Munich-Bricks is selling new parts so I'm
not too much afraid of our own business and profit):
1) This information is completely useless (at least 99%) !
Examples:
Set 21104: A current set but SOLD OUT at S@H!
Collectible Minifigs: You can't buy more than 16 at once, not knowing which
examples you get!
All Excluxive Sets: Normally restricted on 1 set per buyer!
All sets not older than 6 weeks (not sure if longer): restricted to 5 copies
per buyer.
At least these informations should/must be added to have a 'real' comparision,
as
- quantities here are not restricted
- items offered must be at hand, means available.
2) The worldwide S@H prices shown are NOT COMPARABLE between each other!
Sorry, but this will e.g. encourage the old discussion why Lego is more expensive
here in Europe than in the States.
Reasons have discussed often enough: taxes, availability and at last MARKET!
So what will US buyer think when they see their S@H prices compared with the
higher European price (additionally with or w/o VAT)?
3) BL-Seller may sell worldwide while S@H isn't!
So, there might be some 'profit' for sellers who buy sets on nearly official
prices and offer them with a surcharge to such buyers?
Certainly I agree to all the reasons stated above.
I haven't seen ANY PROs up to now. Why?
And last but not least:
SORRY, but I can't understand at all why exactly this 'feature' (may
be it 's a bug ) has been chosen to be implemented.
And more: without any discussion and reflection with any user (seller or buyer)
before.
AND WITHOUT ANY ANNOUNCEMENT and OFFICIAL (means Admins) STATEMENT explaining
any background UP TO NOW!
Hooray communication, hooray community!
Thomas
(Co-Owner of Munich-Bricks)
This statement reflects MY PERSONAL OPINION as well as the PREDOMINANT OPINION
OF MANY. MANY GERMAN KEY SELLERS I'm in contact with resp. I'm posting
on their behalf.

Voted "Yes"! In my 5+ years of reading Forum suggestions, this is the one that
has come the closest to unanimous support. Foster, we're glad you're
still around!
Regarding the "historical data" reason for including MSRP - this is better done
on sites like Brickset which limit their data to specific markets (e.g. UK and
USA, both of which were highly independent during much of the historical period).
If you want MSRP for the whole of Western Europe in the 1970's, for example,
you'd need to display another whole page of data (at least) for each set,
because each country not only had their own prices, but their own currency, and
their own lineup of sets (not even the Danish market carried 100% of all available
sets). Add to this the fact that many prices changed over the years, especially
for sets with long production runs, like motors and parts packs.
Of course, MSRP's from the 90's and 2000's would be more homogenous,
but I still hear stories of prices varying from country to country within the
EU. And that is just Europe - TLG has maintained markets the world over for a
very long time. If someone wants to start compiling this info, more power to
them. But this is exactly the sort of thing the CA's don't want to get
into collecting. And if you just store data from limited markets on BL, it would
not reflect the broad diversity that BL has achieved in its catalog or its membership.
And while we're on the subject of the catalog, I am assuming that before
this MSRP link was added that every last bug relating to the catalog had been
fixed to the satisfaction of the CA's and to those who contribute to the
catalog, and some much-needed catalog features that have been asked for for years
had already been implemented.
